10 Questions: Are you ready for Plastic Surgery?

Courtesy of http://www.newbeauty.com/
You've chosen the right surgeon and you know the procedure recommended is right for you, but are you really ready for plastic surgery? "Don't take things too lightly," says Daytona Beach plastic surgeon Carl Lentz, MD, and neither should your surgeon. "A good surgeon needs to be technically adept at surgery and at identifying physically and emotionally ready candidates."

What makes you truly ready for surgery? NewBeauty™ has the questions you need to ask yourself before heading into the operating room.

1. Are you or is someone close to you going through significant life changes? If so, you might want to put off any cosmetic procedures until things settle down.

2. Are you making an impulsive decision? The American Society of Plastic Surgeons acknowledges that plastic surgery may not be suitable for patients who have been treated for any dependency or mental health condition in the past. If you are currently being treated, be candid with the plastic surgeon and get the support of your therapist before you decide to have surgery.

3. Are you doing this for yourself or for someone else? If someone is pressuring you into surgery, you should resist. The desire needs to come from within yourself. You're the one who is going to have to live with this procedure and the outcome for the rest of your life. "Plastic surgery may make someone other than the patient happy , too," says Dr. Lentz. "But it is ethically mandatory that surgery be what the patient wants, not someone else."

4. What are your goals? You need to be honest with yourself. If you are 57 and you want to look 17 again, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. The same applies if you are aiming to change who you are, rather than change certain aspects of your appearance.

5. Is the outcome you are looking for radical and unnatural? "Plastic surgery isn't like getting a haircut; it won't grow out." Notes Dr. Richard Greco, MD, a plastic surgeon in Savannah, Georgia.

6. What are your real motivations for the surgery? "An ideal candidate is someone who feels totally comfortable in her shoes, doesn't perceive herself as being deformed, but just has one specific problem she wants improved," says Dr. Greco. "While an operation can be a transformative experience, it doesn't transform you into someone else and you shouldn't want it to."

7. Do you expect surgery to change your life? Plastic surgery cannot save your marriage or help you find the perfect relationship or job. "Surgery can give you new confidence to face your challenges," says Atlanta plastic surgeon FOAD Nahai, MD. But only you have the motivation and the power to make changes in your life."

8. Are you prepared for feelings of disappointment, depression or confusion after surgery? Even if everything goes well with the surgery, getting the blues during the healing process is normal. You may feel sore and bruised. You may not look like yourself and you may not see immediate results. The new look may take some getting used to. As Samantha, a 52 year-old woman from Atlanta put it, "My facelift went exactly as we planned and truthfully, I looked pretty great. But it took me a while, psychologically, to get accustomed to this new, younger version of myself."

9. Do you know the risks of the procedure and are you willing to accept these risks? You need to fully understand that things don't always work out as planned. Can you handle the outcome if it is not what you expected or if your health is impaired? Remember, there are no guarantees.

10. If you do feel you're psychologically ready for surgery, do you have the emotional and logistical support to see you through? Depending on the procedure, you'll need someone to take you to the doctor and care for you afterwards. You'll want that person to be someone you can ask to run errands and someone you can voice your concerns to without worrying that they'll say, "I told you not to have surgery."
