My Consultation
First, we talked about which implant size and type would be best for my body type. I also asked about my surgeon's surgical experience with the different implant procedures. Photos were taken and we discussed the results I wished to achieve. The consultation lasted about one and a half hours and because of the length of time we spent together, I felt all my questions were thoroughly answered. I also learned of additional information that I had not considered. I signed all of the consent forms when I went back to my plastic surgeon for a second and final consult prior to surgery.
Before My Surgery
I was told to cease strenuous exercise for about two weeks and avoid certain vitamins and over-the-counter drugs before surgery. I was told to refrain from eating after midnight prior to the surgery and to avoid drinking liquids the morning of surgery. I was also advised to stop alcohol intake three days before surgery.
The Big Day
The morning of my surgery I awoke with anticipation and excitement! I arrived at the outpatient surgical center at 6 a.m. and was escorted to pre-op, where I was given the gown that I would wear during surgery. The anesthesiologist came in and greeted me, and we reviewed the anesthesia. The surgical nurse introduced herself and asked if I had questions. The surgeon came in shortly thereafter to take final measurements and make markings on my chest. The nurse started an IV to help me relax, and then I was wheeled into surgery. The last thing I remember was taking a couple of deep breaths from the mask placed over my mouth.
I don't remember too much about waking up, other than the nurse holding my hand and talking to me. I felt groggy, but not in pain. There was a lot of pressure and tightness in my chest.
Immediately After Surgery
My friend brought me home from the outpatient center and stayed with me for the first few days. My surgery was on Friday morning, and I was home by noon. I was required to take an antibiotic, beginning the day of surgery. I slept on and off for the rest of the day, but I got up to walk around a little like my doctor suggested. I was encouraged to take it easy for a couple of days, so my friend prepared my meals, fluffed the pillows and helped me when I needed it. When I looked in the mirror Saturday morning, I was shocked at the transformation-a full four inches! I was very happy with the results and I was feeling a little better.
By Sunday, I was ready to take a shower and wash my hair! It was a challenge to put my arms over my head, so I improvised and tipped my head over to wash my hair. I was still swollen and tight, but felt very little pain. I was black and blue, but the bruising was quite minimal. I was advised not to allow the water directly on my breasts during showering because there was surgical tape around the nipples.
After 2 Weeks
At the two-week mark, the swelling was gone, there was no bruising and my breasts had shrunk, to what I think will be the their final size. I started as a 34-B, and the doctor inserted 375 cc implants which took me up almost two cup sizes. I'm still wearing a zip-down-the-front sports bra for support, which isn't very flattering under tops, so I can't wait to go shopping for new lingerie!
My Results
I feel and look great! I am so happy with the results. The breast skin appears soft and smooth. My nipples are more sensitive, but my surgeon assures me that it's temporary and will return to normal.
My At-Home Recovery Tips
Don't be surprised if you feel anxious, sad or blue immediately following the surgery. It is a combination of the anesthesia wearing off and the fact that you have undergone a tremendous body transformation. It will take a couple of days to get used to the "new" you. I heard a sound when I raised my arms for a few days after surgery-my doctor told me that is the body adjusting to the implant and the cavity forming around the implant. I'm glad I followed my doctor's advice to gently start raising my arms the day after surgery-it helped me get my range of motion back.
